Materials in 3D printing

One of 3D Formtech’s competitive advantages is the quality of materials used in 3D printing of both plastic and metal. All the materials we use are certified and tested to ISO standards. We always source materials either directly from manufacturers or through partners, such as an equipment manufacturer. This provides us with comprehensive test reports, for example, and we know what kind of pieces have been produced from the material.

Materials – Plastic 3D printing

Polyamide PA 2200

Polyamide PA 2200 is a suitable material for many different printouts. It is durable and tolerates mechanical stress and chemicals well. The material has a plastic appearance and allows for the creation of very fine details on the product.

PA 2200 is also well-suited for the food and healthcare industries. The material is approved for food contact by an EU directive and it has been granted an ISO certificate (bio-compatible).

Applications:

  • functional elements
  • medical applications, such as prostheses
  • plastic parts typically made by injection moulding
See the specifications here Sertificate

Glass-filled polyamide PA3200GF

PA3200GF is a white, glass-reinforced polyamide. It has excellent stiffness properties and good tolerance for heat and stress.

Glass-filled polyamide is a durable material and provides excellent surface quality and accurate product details.

Applications:

  • rigid casings
  • parts subject to wear and abrasion
  • parts used in higher than normal thermal conditions
  • applications requiring rigid and heat-resistant parts
See the specifications here

AdSint PA11 ESD

AdSint® PA11 ESD (ElectroStatic Discharge) is a PA11 powder containing carbon fibre with low manipulation restrictions. It has good dissipative properties (10^5 Ohms/square) keeping the same mechanical properties and smooth surface like AdSint® PA11. AdSint® PA11 ESD has been tested and approved on most common SLS printers. The refreshrate is between 30% and 40%, depending on the application.

Applications:

  • Production tools and jigs
  • demanding surroundings (e.g. high pollution, chemical exposure)
  • to protect electrical voltages

TPU

TPU is a thermoelastic material combining the properties of rubber and plastic. Workpieces manufactured from TPU are soft and flexible but also very durable.

TPU has good tensile strength and wear resistance. The hardness of the material is Shore A80.

Applications:

  • elastic workpieces
  • prototypes
  • seals, hoses

PA 2241 FR, fire-rated material

PA 2241 FR is a flame retardant polyamide 12 for processing in laser sintering systems. It contains a halogen-based flame retardant. Mainly due to its recyclability the material is economical, enabling low-cost part production.

Applications:

  • aviation (interior, e.g. air ducts and air outlet valves)
See the specifications here

PA 2210 FR, fire-rated material

A new, fire-rated material which will extend the possibilities of 3D printing to even more areas. PA 2210 FR has good stiffness properties and is extremely well-suited for manufacturing fire-resistant mechanical parts. The material contains a chemical fire-resistant component, which encapsulates the plastic contained in the workpiece in case of fire.

The material is classified with a fire rating of UL94 V-0 with a minimum material thickness of 3.00 mm.

UL has issued a Blue Card certificate for the material, which specifies more detailed manufacturing specifications to achieve the required properties.

Applications:

  • mechanical parts requiring fire resistance
  • aviation industry
